KOA

Koa is the largest and second most common tree found on the Hawaiian Islands. It is endemic to Hawaii. These trees were on the islands for millennia before humans arrived. The word Koa, in the Hawaiian language, means brave, bold, fearless, or warrior. These are fitting words to describe this wonderful wood that has commonly been used for making traditional surfboards and canoes. This hardwood has long been used for Art making because of its beauty and resiliency. It sure makes for one fine looking Robot!

MONKEY POD

These towering titans are believed to have arrived in Hawaii in 1847. They can grow up to 80 feet tall. Oahu has some of the largest Monkey Pods. One tree can span an entire acre! The pods, leaves, and roots are used all over the world to treat a number of ailments. Its size and shape provide protection for vegetation below. Monkey Pod is also a great nitrogen fixer. The contrast between the sap wood and the heartwood of these trees makes some striking color combinations on a Robot.  

WENGE

Millettia laurentii is a legume tree from Africa

Wenge (pronounced WING-gay) is an extremely exotic African tropical hardwood. Wenge has been prized by woodworkers for its hardness and rich dark chocolate appearance. However, this fascinating wood must be treated with respect because it has another even darker side as well. The dust produced by this wood when cutting and sanding is an eye irritant and it can cause dermatitis with effects similar to that of Poison Ivy. The dust can also cause respiratory problems and drowsiness. Wenge splinters are no joke, either. They can go septic! So, handle this wood with caution and you will be rewarded with its beauty.

MANGO

This magnificent juicy stone-fruit tree is Loved all over the tropics for its tasty fruit and its mesmerizing woodgrain patterns. When mango season comes around these beautiful creatures drop honey sweet golden mana from their branches. All Mango wood used for the creation of Buffer the Robot is sourced and milled locally in Waimanalo, Hawaii. 

KAMANI

The Kamani Tree, also known as the Alexandrian Laurel, is one of the original Canoe Plants that ancient Polynesian settlers brought to the Hawaiian Islands during early migrations.
